According to Premium Beat, there are 4 types of comedy films: slapstick, screwball, parody, and black. Slapstick comedy is considered the default template for producers of comedy films because it has actors performing "exaggerated physical stunts and gags." Its foundations include "absurd situations, exaggerated humor, and reaction accompanied by vigorous energy." Screwball comedies, on the other hand, are often associated with the romantic film genre and includes a strong female lead that battles a masculine character in the relationship. Parody comedies tend to mock other forms of art, while black comedy humor is derived from morbid topics including but not limited to murder, suicide, poverty, and war "but the disturbing realism is normally removed to allow audiences to see the funny side instead."

Despicable Me is a great example of the slapstick comedy genre.
